You Know You're An Adoptive Family When...

  • your child's new therapist scares the snot out of her... and you love him for it, and know you've finally found the right guy.
  • you daydream about how to add rooms or re-partition space in your small home to make room for more children.
  • for that matter, you wonder if there's someone who could retro-fit your van with another bench seat instead of the 2 seperate ones in the middle row, to make room for just one more child...
  • you have to remind yourself to let out of town friends and family members know how many kids you currently have, in case they missed a coming or a going.
  • you have to explain why the birthparents they love aren't on their "Safe-Side Adults" list.
  • you overhear your newest children talking in the bathroom, debating about whether they like this home better, or a previous one.
  • you tell your son he's your favorite black-haired 8 year old (since you also have a blonde 8-year old), and he replies with "And you're ONE OF my favorite moms."
  • your children see an advertisement with a baby in it and ask if we can "get that one."
  • your children ask to "keep" the babysitter.

NOT Back to School Day

We started school this week, and the children are having a blast - we are doing a great math program, an incredible spelling series, history, literature, art & drawing, Bible, a weather & seasons unit study, and much more!  We took a nature walk on Tuesday, spotting the early signs of fall, and did some great leaf rubbings.  And most importantly... Hailey is getting her chance to learn to read!  She is so excited and doing just awesome in her lessons!  She'll be reading books in no time.  I'm running Tyler through the same program, at about 8x the pace.  Even though he's a good reader, the approach is a little different from what they are teaching in public school, so I think he'll pick up some great decoding training by zipping through it.

Today we had our (first) annual "NOT Back to School Day" celebration with friends - we did just our daily lessons (Math, Spelling ,Reading) then took off for the beach!!  We spent the whole day playing in the sand and water, observing sea life (starfish, crabs, clams), eating a picnic lunch and cupcakes and hanging out with 8 other homeschooling families... all rejoicing in the beautiful weather and the fact that we were able to go to the beach today rather than being stuck in desks in a school building!
