My kids are starting dance class tonight. All four of them. Hallie liked the idea of dancing. Sam was sold when he found out there would be girls there. Molly wants to dance with boys. Gideon just wanted to do what everyone else was doing, but had to be talked down when he heard he'd have to dance with a GIRL! haha.
I've been dancing for almost 2 months. When I was in high school, I felt uncoordinated and shy and never really got the hang of it...or tried very hard. But I always wished I could dance. I sometimes joked that dancing was my achilles heel. I could do ANYTHING. Except dance.
When I started out on this ”crazy year” of mine, I was determined to find out who I am, what I like, what brings me joy, AND... to try some new things. Dancing was one of those.
I've made a few great guy friends this year. All of them I dated briefly, then moved into a friendship. One of my very best guy friends is my buddy Jared. Jared loves to dance. (Actually, he's my brotha from anotha motha...but that's for another post.) So he and I started a West Coast Swing class together. It has been a blast. Ran into a nice guy I knew from high school, gained confidence in my ability to catch on and move, and am having so much fun. As a bonus..., I've had to face my perfectionism! I HATE making mistakes, and you just can't learn to dance without making some mistakes. Its been really good for me. In fact... I'm adding 2 more classes (3 a week) a turns and spins class, and a Night Club 2-Step class!
We are taking classes from Mary at Bellingham Dance Company. I've been so impressed with her teaching style. If you have ever considered learning social dance... I really encourage you to check them out. (And the kids' class could really use some more students... kids 7-12 are welcome, it's $35 a month (try to find another weekly activity for cheaper than that!), but she seems willing to give some discount to families enrolling multiple children. Bring your kids!! It's great excercise, movement, body control, self control, social skills, and FUN!! And you will have the bonus of chatting it up with me in the lobby while the kids dance. :) Monday nights at 5pm at BDC on State Street.
Tonight, my kids are learning Swing Dancing, too. I hope it's as great for them as it's been for me. And it will be something fun we can do as a family!
