I love scrapbooking. It's fun, it's creative, it's therapeutic. And once a month or so I get to hang out with some of my favorite people while we all cut and paste to our hearts' delight.

Growing Up

Sometimes I can't belive how old Sam is getting.  In July he'll be 7.  SEVEN!  Is it just me, or does 7 seem SO much older than 6?

Recently I woke up to find a note sitting on the blanket on top of me: "MAMA. I LOVE YOU!"

Img_1653

And on the back, a note for Brian: "DADDY I LOVE YOU! (ForE MAMAND DAD)"

Img_1655

(OK, his spelling could us a little practice, but the note was just so sweet to wake up to!)  When he heard we were awake, he asked if he could make waffles.  Amused, I said "sure!"  Sure enough, he walked into the kitchen, got out the waffle iron, read the directions on the pancake and waffle mix and made breakfast for the whole family... all by himself.  (Well, I made the bacon, but that's not to say he couldn't have probably figured that out, too.)

Catch-Up

Time to play a bit of catch-up before I forget everything that's happened around here!

Yesterday:

We went to a friend's birthday party.

Img_1825

Img_1821

Gracelyn turned 7 and invited us to play at Jump Around Fun Zone with her.

Img_1836

The kids loved it and got all smiley-sweaty!  I'm hopeful that the business will survive the Summer months so it will be around when we'll really need it - in the cold, wet Fall and Winter!

Img_1838

Of course, they were so busy moving, moving, moving, pictures were hard to come by!

Img_1819

When we got home, we took the opportunity to enjoy our first REALLY nice day in what seems like years, but has really "only" been about 7 months.  They played in the frog-sandbox-converted-into-a-swimming pool.

Thursday:

Annie got spayed.  Poor little thing.  An Ovariohysterectomy with no choice in the matter.  She went right into the carrier with no trouble (not fighting and clawing like all of our previous cats), she didn't meow at all in the car like the others have, and she was a perfect little patient... except for biting the vet when he tried to look in her mouth.  Well, you know, you can only behave for so long.  Enough is enough.

Img_1813

When she got home, she defied all doctors orders.  The paper we got said she wasn't allowed to jump, run, climb, etc, for several days.  Good luck with that.  But when we gave her the first dose of the medicine they sent home with her, she konked out immediately for more than an hour!  Yesterday she was trying to catch flies again already.  Two days later, she's doing just great - although she's moving a tiny bit slower, she seems otherwise normal.

Last week:

I sewed some cute clothes for my kids!

049

The shirts are both identical boys' shirts, but I added an applique to Hallie's, and ran elastic around the inside of the sleeves to make them gather and look more girly.

026

The instructions for a Twirly Skirt are online.  It was very simple.  I've since made Hallie another skirt (this time without the tie, just elastic-waisted) and shirt and a pair of matching bloomers.

And... Sam went to Dancing Dog Clayworks with his Cub Scout Den.

071

Brian took him and said he really was getting into the clay, so he bought him a 1/2 brick.  Not sure yet what he's going to do with it, but it sounds like a fun Father-Son project.

078

Earlier this month...

Our friends Greg and Merriann brought their tiller out to our house and helped us break up a small section of ground to use as a garden this year!

051

Remember my seedlings?  Yeah, almost all of them died.  I think we saved one zucchini and 4 broccoli plants.  But we went to Joe's Gardens and bought a bunch of veggie plants.  Now we're battling the slugs and bugs for our lettuce!!  We're hopeful this year that we can grow a little and learn a lot.

002

Speaking of growing...  Our girls are sure getting big!!

005

003

I took those photos just moments ago.  They are hiding in their nests and panting from the heat!  They love having the top of their hen house open, but I put it part way back on and just gave them some extra waterers to help them cool down.

We moved them outside on May 2nd.  (Wow, it's amazing how much they've grown even since these photos!)  I did put their heat lamp out with them to keep them warm at night, but they are doing great and seem happier to have more space.

In the corner there... that's Wilbur.  (Remember, we're reading Charlotte's Web in homeschool, so I couldn't pass up this cute little pig statue to keep our chickens company.)  I still need to finish their chicken run.  Oh for more hours in the day.

There.  I believe you are now officially caught up on our lives!

Thirty-two (Part 2)

OK, where did we leave off?

When Brian got home, he announced he was picking up a Chicken Chimichanga for me for dinner from Mi Mexico (shrimp fajitas for himself - crazy fish eater!)  Later in the evening, we all loaded up in the van and headed to Red Robin to share a piece of Mile High Mud Pie.  Easily my favorite food of the day.  Brian's intentions were so great - he got all things I really love, but there's some kind of curse with me and take-out.  If there is going to be something wrong with an order, it will inevitably be with MY portion.  On this particular day (though Brian did everything right!!) the breakfast was cold, and the dinner was burned.  But the mud pie... delectable.  Plus it was fun to share it as a family.

Complete with scary-silly birthday glasses compliment of our server.

The next evening, the birthday continued!  My Grump Therapy friends wanted to meet for dinner to celebrate my birthday.  Everything tasted wonderful!  Diane insisted on paying for my meal, which was so kind, and Renee... well.  You can read about it for yourself on her blog.  She got me a really fun custom "Grump Therapy" Starbucks card.  Awesome.

Thirty-two (Part 1)

Happy Birthday to me!

My birthday with my extended family has been postponed.  Mostly because this month's calendar is already just very full... the other part was they were bugging me for a "birthday list" at the very beginning of this month.  It was a reasonable request, but I just didn't have time to make one.  So I suggested postponing until our family gets together at Lummi Island at the end of the month.  We'll be celebrating my sister in law's birthday while we are there, and I really don't mind waiting.  Plus, it bought me a few more days to come up with a list.

There's a problem with birthday lists, though.  In our family we give to everyone for their birthdays, so it's not presumptuous to make a list of things you'd like, and like I said, they bug you for it until it's distributed.  But every year, I do my very best to include a variety of things in all price ranges (from a 2-room tent to my purple 409), in lots of categories (digital scrapbooking supplies to custom-designed Converse), both available online and in stores (from board games to Homeschooling books), both practical and frivolous (Hanes white crew socks to a Webkinz chicken).  And every year, they complain.  The list is too boring, there aren't enough ideas, there's nothing "fun" (which I think means fun for them to buy, not for me to receive - because there is plenty of that).  Which finally prompted me to ask this year "What do you WANT me to WANT?" They didn't have an answer for that, either.

I do like gifts, and I am thankful to Gary Chapman for making it well-known that some people give and receive love in the language of gifts.  While I'm not convinced it's my primary love language, it's up there for me, and I've struggled in the past with wondering if I was too greedy or materialistic because I enjoyed receiving gifts so much.  But the truth is, it doesn't matter much what the gifts are - I just like knowing people cared enough about me to put the thought into choosing a gift they thought I would like.  And I really do like giving - at LEAST as much as receiving.  Probably more.  Though, after a fun birthday like this one has been, I have to admit I'm pretty thrilled to receive, too.

The night before my birthday was our end-of-the-year Steering dinner.  (Steering is the team that kinda plans and handles everything for our MOPS group.)  Our coordinator, Heather planned a really fun evening at a family friend's house (her "second mother", I believe it was) - with a delicious meal and time to just relax and talk.  When I arrived in the pre-determined meeting place before carpooling to the house (we weren't told where we were going or what we were doing besides that dinner was involved - that was a fun aspect to the evening), the second person to arrive was Stephani, who surprised me with an early birthday gift.  One of those great "I saw this and thought of you because I knew it would make you smile" kind of gifts.  And it so did.  A big, adorable stuffed frog!  Hallie has insisted he is Hoppy's dad - so he's been named "Poppy."  I just love his big floppy hands and feet!  Thanks Steph!  He really does make me smile.

Img_1862

Since I so hate being the one to break up a party, we left the dinner much later than I expected (one of the drawbacks to carpooling), and still had to get my kids from my mom and step-dad's house - they were graciously sitting for me that evening so I could attend the dinner while Brian worked.  (Thanks again, Mom and Bruce!)  Once I got back to my car, it was well after 9, and I had plans to meet a friend at 9:30.  It was Kristie-Hilary day, after all!  So as Brian was leaving work at 9:20 or so, I had to call him and ask if he could get to the kids before I could to relieve the sitters.

My dear friend Kristie has a birthday just two days before me, so we have made it a tradition to get together on the day between our birthdays (May 12th) every year.  This year, the only time I had available was after all normal people would be home getting ready for bed!  (Thank you Kristie, for being so flexible).  I had to call her on the way, also, and let her know I was running late.  She very kindly offered to sit at Applebees with her Bible and wait for me.

(Are you still reading?  My goodness, this is turning into a novel and we haven't even gotten to my birthday yet!)

Of course, the best gift of our time together was just that - uninterrupted time together to sit and fellowship.  But Kristie is a gifts-girl, too, so she always thinks of the most thoughtful things to give people.  This year it was a vinyl sign kit from Treasury of Memories that I'd been admiring for probably a year or more, but have never bought myself.  It says "A small house can hold as much happiness as a big one."  How perfect is that?  (Again, thank you Kristie!  I love it!)

Img_1858

The morning of my birthday, I slept right through my husband sneaking out the back door, and woke up to him coming back in... with breakfast in bed!  He'd ordered a Country Omelet from IHOP and brought it home to me.  He said he wants to work on getting good at breakfast in bed, but he didn't think my birthday was the best time to "practice", just in case he did something wrong.  :)
Img_1804

He also brought me a mocha from Starbucks - with a funny story.  He had ordered coffee for himself while he was there, too - a Mint Mocha Frappaccino Light, and had gotten so excited about trying this new-to-him drink, that he didn't realize until he got up to the drive-through window that he'd forgotten to order a drink for me!  He hurriedly asked the baristas if they could add another drink for his wife's birthday and they looked back at him with shock and concern that he'd almost made that mistake.  I just think it's hilarious!  The fact is, he didn't forget, and I had a delicious drink to take with me to Bible Study that morning.

It was our last Bible Study of the year with some of the gals from MOPS.  We've been Studying "Bad Girls of the Bible" by Liz Curtis Higgs, which has been a fun perspective on many of the familiar stories, exploring the motivations of bad girls from Jezabel to Delilah (and less evil ones, too, like Rahab and Eve.)  I led a study at the beginning of the year on "My Heart's at Home: Being the Intentional Mom Your Family Needs" by Jill Savage.  We really enjoyed that one, too, but by mid-year I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with my comittments, and Chantel was willing and able to lead our second book of the year.  She did a terrific job of it, too!  Despite dwindling numbers (it happens EVERY year in that study group), we had some great discussions right down to the last meeting.  Thank you Chantel!  You did such a great job leading the group, especially in light of technical issues!  (The DVD we were using as a companion to the book had short sections on each chapter, but had no scene markers, so couldn't be skipped ahead to the right section, nor could it even fast forward or rewind!!  So Chantel had to map out where each story fell in the timeline of the movie, get there early every week and play the DVD on mute until it got to the right spot then pause it until we were ready for it!  What committment!

After Bible Study I took a mosey on past JC Penney to pick up some jeans, since I'd worn holes in one pair that week.  Wouldn't you know, they've stopped carrying the kind I liked?  But I did find another style, and while I was there, gave myself a mini-birthday-shopping spree and picked up a pair of summer shorts (All of mine from last year are too big so I had none) and some cute tops.  :)

When I got home, Brian had a Chicken Sandwich from Burger King waiting for me  - probably my favorite fast food item, but I very rarely have one, so it was a nice treat.  After lunch, they gave me my main gift (so far): Life Twists and Turns.  If you haven't seen it, it's pretty cool.  They took the old "game of life" and updated it with new salaries, jobs, and credit cards with a little machine that keeps track of all of your stuff for you.  Just stick your card in on your turn and it automatically adds on your salary for that turn, calculates inflation or interest for your house, devaluation of your vehicle, etc, and at the end of the game, converts all of your belongings and experiences to "life points" and determines the winner.  He also told me I have another gift coming in the mail in the next week or two.  Don't know what that is yet!  On a trip to the grocery store on my birthday, he also came back with a $15 gift card to Starbucks for me and a bottle of purple 409.  :)  Everything was "decoratively" wrapped this year in plastic grocery sacks.

Brian had a doctor's appointment in the afternoon, and while he was gone I got a call from a friend asking if I could take a message to another friend who lived nearby.  It was no problem, so we hopped in the car to zip over there and when I did... Tami surprised me with a super cute pair of Brown and Green flip-flops.  Stephani mentioned seeing them at Fred Meyer and Tami had remembered, thought of me and checked when she was there and bought them... and just by chance, bought the exact right size!

Mother's Day 2008

I've always considered Mother's Day as kind of a "Mom's Day Off".  That doesn't work so well when your husband has to work the whole day!  Nevertheless, my family took good care of me.  I made a breakfast casserole the night before, so we just had to throw it in the oven that morning.  The family gave me gifts:

011

Flowers and a fancy new Coffee Grinder from Brian (the roses were from him - the red carnation stem was from church and the lilacs from my grandma's house), Coffee-Themed Kitchen Towels from Hallie, and 3 packs of Muffin Wrappers from Sam, for the muffins we eat most Sunday mornings.  And of course, some very sweet notes and pictures from my kids and a day full of hugs and "I love you"s!

We went to church as a family, then Brian was off to work.  He wanted to buy me a coffee in between church and work, but there just wasn't time.  Bummer!  He still gets points for the thought, though.  The kids and I took gifts to my mom and grandma, then to save myself the work of one meal, I picked up burgers at Lees for lunch.  I also threw spaghetti sauce in the crockpot so it would be minimal work on my part, but be ready when Brian came home for dinner.  Have I mentioned I love my crockpot?  Since my birthday is just 2 days after Mother's Day this year, I'm in for several days of extra love and appreciation!  My family is awesome that way.

Wednesdates & Starbucks Update

Here's one of our new family traditions.  Brian is off work on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  I have MOPS or Bible Study on Tuesdays, so Wednesday seemed like the perfect time for us to have some one-on-one time with our kids.  When the family gets larger, we may have to take turns, but as it is, we have 2 kids and 2 parents.

For many months now, Brian and Sam have spent Wednesday mornings together.  They usually go out for doughnuts or occasionally to McDonalds for Fruit and Yogurt Parfaits.  Then Wednesday afternoon, Brian takes Hallie to her dance class.  Some days they wander down to the other end of the shopping center for a treat at GiGi's Cafe.  I've recently started taking the other child somewhere at the same time.  Hallie and I usually go to Starbucks or somewhere like that.  Sam and I tend to hit a park or a fun store like Launching Success.  It's nice to have the time to give them individual attention.

Img_1687

Last week I had saved a special Bible verse I found for Hallie that I wanted to share with her on our "Wednesdate".  She listened to the verse and seemed to understand my point, but didn't care much to discuss it.  I guess my four year old just isn't ready for theology lessons.  (Could have been also that we were talking in the car in the parking lot of a park... and that slide looked awfully tempting.)  Sigh.

Speaking of Wednesday, Grump Therapy took place at the usual location this week.  We discussed whether to go elsewhere, not knowing if they'd be open again, but decided to try.  If they were closed, we'd snap a few pictures to scrapbook, and decide where to go instead.  If they were open, we'd be there to support them.  Well, they were open!  The very next day after the crash.  They  had half of the restaurant closed for "construction", but the repairs were well on their way.  I'd be surprised if they aren't finished by today.

Three-Toed Sloths

Did you know that three-toed sloths can't walk?

During the rare times they go down to the ground (such as to change trees for food), they move along by dragging themselves by their hands. They can stand on their feet, but cannot walk on them.  Surprisingly, sloths are good swimmers, however.

Threetoed_sloth2_2

Also of interest, they do most things upside down: eat, sleep (an average of 15 hours per day), mate, and give birth. Because of their upside down life, many of their internal organs (liver, stomach, spleen, pancreas) are in different positions from other mammals.

Threetoed_sloth

They eat leaves and buds. Their low rate of metabolism enables them to live on relatively little food. They do not have incisors and crop leaves with their hard lips. They don't drink but get their water from eating juicy leaves & licking dewdrops.

My little site-meter in the bottom left of my blog has been fun.  At the bottom of that window there is an "options" button, where I can look at a map to see where people are visiting the site from.  (Don't worry, it doesn't tell me who you are, just where you're from.)  It's been really exciting to see new visitors from Denmark, New Zealand, Belgium, Canada, Australia, Nigeria, Mexico, and many more fun places.  (Hi!!  Thanks for reading!!)  A couple of days ago I checked the map and in that one day, there were visitors from EVERY continent... except Antarctica (largely uninhabited) and South America.  I feel the need to appeal to the South American population... why don't they like me??  ;)

I thought maybe a discussion on coffee beans would be helpful (a subject I do enjoy, and I am thankful to Columbia and Brazil and other South American countries for their contribution to my habits).  But Renee suggested Three-toed sloths.  Whether it will get me a reader from South America, I know not.  But I did learn a few things this morning about sloths!

Room to Grow

We bought a van.  A Kia Sedona.  (Our last two cars have been Kia's and we've been extremely happy with them.  Most reliable vehicles we've ever owned.) My MOPS-Craft-Team-Partner, Quinn was selling hers, and the timing seemed right.

017

It's nice to have the extra space to haul things (all of the back seats fold up or come out.)  And to be about to haul PEOPLE!  We've never been able to invite anyone to ride with us before now, as our 4-seater was full of our family of four!

Best of all, having more room in our vehicle means we can reasonably transport more family members, were any to join our crew.  Interesting, isn't it?... The kids rooms (by foster care standards) have room for exactly 3 more kids... and now, so does our van!

Home Date

Things have changed in the world.  Choosing a babysitter is a lot more complicated than it used to be.  It's also a lot more expensive.  That's one reason we don't go out as much as we probably should.  Marriage seminars, books, and speakers all talk about a weekly date night.  That's just not practical for us.  We are very blessed that our new church has a monthly date night, where we can drop off the kids to play at the church while we go out.  We did it last month, and the kids had a great time!  It's coming up again this Friday and we are counting the days.  (Oooh!  That's tomorrow!)

Every so often, though, we try to sneak in a date here and there without getting a sitter.  We've done it for anniversaries when scheduling just didn't work out.  But most often, it's just because we want to and because we need that time together to nurture our relationship and enjoy being together.  We call them "home dates".

Last Tuesday Brian had to work on his usual day off.  They had some big meeting that everyone needed to be at.  It occurred to me that morning that this would be a great opportunity - since he'd be off earlier than usual - at 7... precisely the time I put the kids to bed!  I told Brian there was a possibility of a date that night, but no guarantee, as I hadn't heard back from Renee and Diane when he left for work that morning.  I had grump therapy scheduled for that night, but the girls were gracious enough to let me put my family first and we moved our meeting to the next night.

About 6:30, the kids and I hopped in the van (oh yeah... I haven't blogged about the van yet!  I'm so far behind!!) and drove to Brian's work.  I left a little card on his seat for him to find when he got out of work, asking him to go pick up our dinner (I'd pre-ordered it that afternoon) from Black Angus.  It's one of his favorite restaurants, and I knew that would be a fun surprise.  (Also that afternoon I'd mowed the lawn for him - to give him one task for the week he wouldn't have to find time for.)  I'm happy to report, he was blessed by both gestures.

Img_1678

He came in with our dinner and I had the table set (it folds up to a smaller "table for two" size) in the livingroom, complete with a candle.

Img_1679

We enjoyed our prime rib,

Img_1682

watched a movie ("The Heartbreak Kid", which had some funny parts but ultimately we didn't care for - very crude and almost promotes unfaithfulness), shared a piece of strawberry cheesecake

Img_1685_2

and had a wonderful evening just being a couple.

My Starbucks

I think maybe we're going to have to hold Grump Therapy somewhere else this week.

Here's a few photos of MY STARBUCKS.  The window we usually sit by:

Here are the stories from several local news sources (somewhat conflicting, though they may be):

KIRO 7: Car Crashes Through Starbucks, Injuring 5

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Five people were hurt when a parked car lurched forward, crashed through the window of a Bellingham Starbucks and came to rest against the store's back wall, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

At 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, the 70-year-old driver of a rental car pulled up to the coffee shop on West Bakerview Road. The man said he was parking and before he could get out, the car lurched forward and crashed through the Starbucks.

The Bellingham Fire Department transported five people to the hospital. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

The driver from Arlington, Texas was OK.

Police are investigating the incident.

KING 5: Car crashes into Starbucks, injuring 5 people

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A car crashed into a Starbucks Tuesday morning, sending five people to the hospital with minor injuries.

The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. on Baker Road near Interstate 5.

Police say the driver, a Texas man in his 60's, was unfamiliar with the rental car and accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake and went into the store.

Witnesses describe a sound like an explosion as the car crashed into the building. It sent glass, cups of coffee and furniture flying as patrons tried to get out of the way.

The driver was not hurt, but the five people who were injured were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital for bumps and bruises.

When the victims arrived at the hospital, nurses weren't aware they actually needed treatment. Apparently, they thought it was part of a disaster drill.

No decision has been made on possible charges against the driver.

KOMO 4: 5 injured when car crashes through Bellingham Starbucks

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Five people were injured Tuesday morning when a car smashed through the front of a Starbucks store.

Lt. Steve Felmley said the 70-year-old man was pulling into the store parking lot at 1031 W. Bakerview Road around 9:30 when his Chrysler 300M accelerated and crashed through the front window of the building.

Five customers -- four women and a man -- were injured. One of the women was pinned against a wall, and all five have been taken to a local hospital.

None of the injuries was believed to be life-threatening.

The impact sent glass, furniture and debris flying through the store as the car careened through the store and into the back wall, causing it to partially collapse.

Dr. Don Stevens was inside the store and said he didn't even see the car coming.

"We were sitting at one of the tables here and heard this horrible crash," he said. "The lady that I was with, the car hit her chair and sent her flying to the floor."

Stevens said when the car hit the back wall the tires were still spinning.

"It happened very, very quickly," he said.

The driver was not seriously injured. Police said he is from Arlington, Texas and was visiting family in the area.

The driver told investigators the car was a rental and he doesn't know what happened to cause him to crash through the store.

"He said the car was just running and wouldn't stop," Felmley said. "He had no explanation as to why that occurred.

"He's very sorry this happened. He's glad the injuries weren't more serious."

The Bellingham Herald: 5 hurt when car smashes into Bakerview Starbucks

BELLINGHAM — UPDATED AT 12:01 P.M. — A parked car lurched forward and smashed through the plate glass window of the Starbucks at 1031 W. Bakerview Road this morning, injuring five people before coming to rest against the back wall of the coffee shop’s seating area.

There was no immediate word on the seriousness of the injuries, but they did not appear life-threatening. All the victims were conscious.

Four people were taken to St. Joseph Hospital by ambulance, and a fifth person with a cut on her wrist was taken to the hospital by her husband after medics gave her first aid at the scene. No identities were available.

Starbucks employees said they could not comment.

Bellingham Police Chief Todd Ramsay said the late-model gray Chrysler 300 was a rental car being driven by a Texas man. Officers were interviewing the driver at the scene, and no decision had yet been made on what, if any, charges the driver will face.

In the aftermath, the inside of the coffee shop was strewn with chunks of glass, upended furniture, spilled coffee and drops of blood.

Ashley Myers of Bellingham said she was waiting for her cup of coffee near the counter when the accident occurred.

"All of a sudden the car went through the glass and through the lobby clear to the far wall," Myers said. "There was one guy pinned to the wall. It knocked people out of the way."

Ingrid Martens of Bellingham was sitting with her two-year-old son in another seating area closer to the counter and away from the impact. She said the crash sounded like an explosion.

"It picked up a couple of people in their chairs and just threw them against the wall," Martens said. "Luckily, nobody was under the car … It was kind of miraculous."

One man inside the coffee shop briefly lost sight of his little girl when the car smashed through, and was in a brief panic until he realized his wife had grabbed the child and pulled her out of the way, Martens said. The man declined to be interviewed.

Martens said the driver of the car immediately got out and began helping the bystanders assisting the victims. "He was really shaken up," Martens said.

Psychologist Donald Stevens was sitting at a window table with a woman he was interviewing for a job. Stevens said the onrushing car knocked the woman out of her chair, toppled their coffee cups, and sprayed both of them with chunks of shattered glass. The woman, who declined to give her name, was the one who suffered a cut wrist.

"It was a scary experience," Stevens said. "He hit the wall, and the tires were still spinning."
